Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
