The anticipation about The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities that are viable with a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
