The Cadillac F1 team Employs Apollo Program Strategy to Assemble Unit from Scratch for Australian Startline.

A little more than a full year in the past at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Cadillac were at last granted the green light as the world of Formula One's latest entrant for 2026. Building the organization from the ground up has entailed a frenetic operating tempo that the team boss, Graeme Lowdon, has compared to the NASA lunar mission. As Formula One converges on Las Vegas this race weekend, Cadillac are aware the clock is ticking.

The Countdown to Melbourne

At the season finale of the campaign to be staged in the America, with approximately a hundred days to go before they hit the circuit for the first time in Melbourne at the 2026 opener, the Cadillac F1 project have advanced rapidly but, in what must seem like a sisyphean endeavor, they are cognizant there will never be adequate time.

The technical director, Nick Chester, became part of the nascent operation in early 2023 shortly after it was established, when the team were without even an official entry. He has been at its core ever since and gets a amused expression when reflecting on the ride.

“There might be a short period reflecting at what you’ve done and think: ‘Incredible, what an achievement what we’ve done in a short three-year period,’” Chester states. “And then the very next instant you realize: ‘Well, we’ve still got a significant amount to do.’”

An Unprecedented Task

Chester achieved victories at the Renault team in Alonso's championship-winning years of 2005/2006 and was in command of technical direction at the new Mercedes Formula E team, but no previous experience has been quite like the challenge of introducing the iconic American Cadillac brand, a factory team backed by the parent company, General Motors, into Formula One.

“Establishing an Formula One team from the ground up, when are you ever going to get a chance to do that?” he says. “There's nothing comparable. In an existing team you don’t get the chance to transform cultural approach.”

With each passing day that passes focus are more focused on the approaching critical moment in Melbourne and expectations are being handled.

“It's reasonable to expect that any new team coming in is likely to start at the back but merely participating will be an accomplishment in itself,” Lowdon commented this year and while Chester agreed with this sentiment he felt the team had a statement to make as well.
“The first thing we aim to demonstrate is that we deserve to be there,” he emphasizes. “So that we turn up and we perform competently. We seek to prove that we are a serious contender performing the proper actions on the circuit. When we prove that we are a legitimate team, then we will focus on improvement from there on.”

Racing Talent and Team Building Effort

In the summer they contracted Checo Pérez and Bottas as their racers for 2026, a pair notable for their invaluable experience in performing at the leading positions in two championship-winning squads, Red Bull Racing and Mercedes-AMG, and Valtteri Bottas echoed the sentiment of fighting spirit.

“Naturally, we are pragmatic,” Bottas stated. “We have a huge amount of work to do, and we expect probably a tough opening, because it is F1. But we aren't joining to finish last. In my view with this setup, with this team, these people, it's entirely possible we shouldn’t be able to get relatively quickly to the front and taste victory.”

To achieve that goal hiring has been in overdrive, with employees now reaching over 400 and planned to hit the objective of six hundred rapidly. In addition to their current base at the UK base, the organization are in the midst of completing an main base at Fishers, Indiana in Indy and there is the GM plant in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they are building the facility to produce the power unit, scheduled for the 2029 season – in the meantime they will use Ferrari power units – and the Toyota wind tunnel in Germany. It is a intricate organization, different from the movement in the sport for increased consolidation, and has prompted the innovative team culture to which Nick Chester referred.

NASA Blueprint

“It's closely based on the Apollo program,” remarked Graeme Lowdon ahead of the British GP in the summer. “We have a clear-eyed view, we recognize how tough it is. The schedules, are extremely compressed. OK, it's not a space expedition, but it can seem that way.”

So they have implemented, instead of the traditional management structure, a decentralized management comparable to that of the space agency's, where there were a variety of specialist groups all tackling various components of the mission in a variety of locations.

“If you have to go through a process where someone has a problem and they report it to their supervisor, that supervisor talks to a manager somewhere else, it is relayed back, it’s super slow,” notes Chester. “So we empower people to handle things directly. Avoiding management approval for everything is so much cleaner and quicker.”

Upcoming Challenges

The success of this nimble strategy will be evaluated in the pressure of racing in 2026 and there is a significant degree riding on this for F1, too. Cadillac have recruited as their development driver the emerging American Colton Herta
