The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
