Trumpism's most revealing and distinctive moments – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of several weeks, the American president began displaying everyone his designs for a lavish reception room twice the size than the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to erect it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of fatalities resulting from his reductions to international aid stands at 600,000 and increasing, and this week an analysis predicted his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have dared – really, no previous leader would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.
We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' to 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'
As confusing as it is to witness the leader attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there is one large group within America who might not perceive it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this change developed more gradually, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my childhood, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and since the quickly increasing segment within America may possess limited understanding regarding him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly definitely not the story of an authoritative monarch arising; conversely, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to escape covert authorities. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his message focuses on affection for others, specifically for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to violence is to present the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a method to instruct the assailant; his crime policy states that when a person pilfers your outer garment you should give them your pullover as well.
The evident and direct fact that the Jesus in biblical accounts advocates for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy is what has always made Christianity rather a scandalous religion: engaging for the general public, but due to its natural unconventionality demanding to be contained. In the fifties it was contained via weakening – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Finest of Us
So I have been inspired to observe the persistent defiance to Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired electorate to participate in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags throughout each rally and calls to the best parts of American history.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you welcome them and embrace them or not?
The country is optimally secured, in other words, by reference to the best within national tradition, just as Christianity is most protected through connection to what makes it special and magnificent, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In neither case does it mean feigning the most damaging regarding America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it means both meekness and belief, a combination that committed national faithful should be comfortable with.
